What Makes Sugaring Different From Your Usual Hair Removal Method? (And Maybe Better)

As someone who’s dealt with acne most of my life, I learned early on not to take skincare advice from people with perfect skin who say they ‘just splash water on their face.’ In the same way, when I look for the best approach to hair removal, I look to cultures with centuries of tried-and-tested practice behind them.
Sugaring originated in ancient Egypt and has deep roots across the Middle East and North Africa. If a method has been used, refined, and trusted for thousands of years - and yes, by Cleopatra herself - that’s the kind of wisdom I’m happy to take seriously.
My goal isn’t to bash your method of hair removal, or even traditional waxing. I think different things work for different people, but since starting my work with sugaring I’ve realised how many people don’t know about this ancient and incredibly simple technique. And once people try it, the most common reaction is: “How did I not know about this before?” So let’s talk about why sugaring feels so different - and why it works so well.
Sugaring Works With Your Hair, Not Against It
One of the first things people notice is that sugaring removes hair in the natural direction of
growth. This might sound like a small detail, but it makes a huge difference.
Working with the grain instead of against it means:
● less tugging
● less breakage
● fewer ingrowns
● Smoother and slower regrowth
Especially here in Santa Teresa, where skin is constantly exposed to sun, sweat, sand, and
saltwater, gentler hair removal really does matter.
The Paste Only Sticks to Hair, Not Live Skin
I know I’ve said it many times before but I will keep saying it; Sugaring paste is made of three
ingredients: sugar, lemon juice, and water. It doesn’t attach to live skin, which is why the pull feels cleaner and less aggressive compared to traditional waxing. This is why so many people with sensitive or reactive skin feel immediate relief when they switch.
If you’ve ever walked out of a wax appointment feeling red, irritated, or like your skin needed a day to calm down, you’ll notice the difference right away.
A More Comfortable Experience - In Every Way
I’ve always believed that hair removal has to be a very human service. It’s intimate and it
requires trust. People come in with insecurities, worries, questions, nerves, and sometimes it’s their first time getting any wax done ever - and this is always a huge honour for me.
Sugaring naturally supports a more comfortable environment because:
● it’s slower and more controlled
● the paste is room temperature
● there’s no risk of burns
● communication feels easier and more natural during the process
My clients often tell me, “I thought this would be awkward, but it wasn’t at all.”
Which is always so nice to hear, and exactly what I wanted to create with Get Sugared. I’ve
always felt that your comfort has to be an integral part of the service - not an afterthought.
Your Hair Changes Over Time - In a Good Way
With consistent sugaring, regrowth becomes:
● softer
● finer
● less dense
If you’ve been shaving, you’ll especially notice this difference. The more you sugar, the easier it gets, not just during the appointment, but in your day-to-day life between sessions.
I emphasise “consistent” because I see this time and time again - after your first sugaring
session, when hair seems to grow back more slowly and feels softer, it can be tempting to wait as long as possible before your next appointment.
Which I totally understand because it feels like you’re getting more value. But here’s the catch: the real long-term benefit comes from consistent scheduling, not just waiting. For best long-term outcomes with hair becoming softer, finer, and less dense, we aim for regular, consistent sessions - typically around every 4-5 weeks depending on the area and your individual hair growth. After I sugar you I can also advise you of a more specific time period based off of your hair type and hair removal history.
Naturally Hygienic and Environmentally Gentle
Because the paste is natural and biodegradable, sugaring aligns with a slower, more conscious lifestyle - one that feels very much at home here in Costa Rica. Minimal waste, minimal ingredients, maximum respect for skin and environment.
It’s Not About Perfection - It’s About Care and Intention
I don’t expect everyone to love sugaring automatically. Different things work for different bodies, and that’s okay. But if you’ve been searching for a method of hair removal that’s gentler, cleaner, more intuitive, and just… makes sense, sugaring might be exactly what you’ve been missing.
And if Cleopatra trusted it thousands of years ago, I think we can at least give it a fair chance. Come and Get Sugared at Skin & Soul!

Very insightful. I’m looking forward to my first appointment now!
